

A few days later, before shipping, thought I should copy the drive serial number to see whether the repair process would result in a replacement or repair.

When the drive was finally erased (files deleted - not formatted, as I understand this might clear SMART errors) it was still showing errors. Whilst moving its contents to a different drive, only one file failed to copy. So I initiated an Amazon return as the drive is still under warranty. I immediately ran SeaTools (several times, with computer reboots in between) but it failed on all occasions:
